State-wide SWL Portal

In 2016 the state government funded a reformed Structured Workplace Learning program with the 31 Local Learning and Employment Networks across Victoria. The LLENs would facilitate access to appropriate workplace learning opportunities for senior vocational students via an online portal.

On the 6th May, 2016 the online Portal was launched by the Victorian State Minister for Education The Hon. James Merlino MP. It will help young people gain vocation skills and experience to assist with their transition into the workforce. The portal is a website particularly helpful for Students, Teachers, Employers and Parents searching for placements that meet the need of vocational education and training.

Features of the portal:

  • EASILY ACCESSIBLE FROM RANGE OF DEVICES
  • NO LOG-IN FOR PUBLIC VIEW
  • DIVERSE RANGE OF OPPORTUNITIES
  • CURRENT AND CONSISTENT CONTENT

EASILY ACCESSIBLE FROM RANGE OF DEVICES

The State-wide SWL portal can be visited at www.workplacements.education.vic.gov.au

A quick and easy way to go to the website is to type SWL HOME.  Searches for opportunities can be made quite easily from a range of devices including mobiles, tablets, computers or lap tops.

NO LOG-IN FOR PUBLIC VIEW

Anyone can view the opportunities available on the SWL portal. It is free and students can search for opportunities without the need to have a login or pay.  Students who are studying a VET course at school, competing VCAL or are enrolled in VCE's Industry and Enterprise are able to go to the website and search for opportunities by suburb, course and industry.

If a student shares an opportunity with a teacher at their school a log in becomes necessary for the school. Teachers will need to request SWL access training and a log in to arrange SWL placements where thery are deemed suitable for the student.  This can be done by contacting the Brimbank Melton LLEN on (03) 9361 9323.

DIVERSE RANGE OF OPPORTUNITIES

Across Victoria, LLEN employees visit employers in a wide range of industries to identify appropriate SWL opportunities. The Brimbank Melton LLEN visit every employer to discuss the hours, typical duties, dress code and qaulities needed to complete that SWL opportunity. VCAL opportunities for work related skills are available for those who would like to try something different to their industry skills program or change their employer. VET opportunities align closely with VET programs and highlight current industry trends. NOTE: VCE Industry & Enterprise has recently been included as a relevant course for the SWL portal.

Opportunities can be searched from across the state of Victoria allowing students to find the best possible place to complete their SWL. They are not confined to their local area - they can go anywhere they are prepared to travel to.

A Brimbank Melton opportunity will often feature support for students experiencing difficulties finding appropriate SWL opportunities. Look for tags such as: Special Needs Supported; CALD,  Koorie Supported, Newly Arrived and At Risk.

CURRENT AND CONSISTENT CONTENT

All opportunities are displayed in a consistent manner. By visiting the SWL portal you will find that there is a map locating the business, up to date placement details, instructions specifically for the teacher, similar opportunities and which LLEN posted the opportunity. The All the LLENs across the state are continually adding opportunities to the SWL portal. This means that there will be new opportunities added throughout the year allowing students to consider other options. Teachers can see which opportunities have been recently posted via their teacher/ school login.  Once opportunities have been taken - it goes off the portal until new dates are available.

Every term SWL opportunities are reviewed and updated according to the employer's experiences and request.
