Brimbank / Melton

Local Learning and Employment Network

Strategic Goal 3

Year 6 – 7 Transition

This strategy aims to improve student engagement in Years 5 & 6 for successful transition to Year 7.  A key component of this is the engagement of families in supporting students at risk of disengaging.  The Student Mapping Tool (SMT) is the mechanism for identifying disengaged young people and tracking support interventions and their effectiveness.

Brimbank/Melton LLEN is working closely with the Melton Regional Network Leader (RNL) and Melton Secondary schools and feeder primary schools.  Doug Smith, creator of the SMT, is working on Brimbank/Melton LLEN’s behalf as consultant to the project.

In 2010-2011 the following activities were undertaken with Brimbank/Melton LLEN partners towards this strategic goal:

  • Embedding the effective use of the SMT in each participating school
  • Analysis of existing school data through the SMT
  • Planning approach to project with schools and RNL
