Welcome to the Local Learning & Employment Network for the Brimbank & Melton Region

Local Learning and Employment Networks are Incorporated Associations and act as partnership brokers, not service providers.  Under the new contract period 2010-2013, the LLEN's target group has been expanded to include 10 - 19 year olds.  As well, specific strategies to enhance our work have been articulated, namely that we will work with organisations representing four stakeholder groups:

  • Education and training

  • Business and industry

  • Parents and families

  • Community

For further information with regard to objectives, key areas of work, how we work, strategic goals, BMLLEN's impact, please access the following document:

Youth Services Forum - 21st May 2010

On Friday, 21st May, the BMLLEN, in conjunction with Djerriwarrh Employment & Education Services and WCIG, hosted a Youth Services Forum at the VU Convention Centre in Sunshine.

The aim of the Forum was to both introduce the Youth Connections and Partnership Brokers programs as well as create a space for all Youth Service Providers to meet and share information with schools and other service providers.  Over 100 people attended on the day and feedback has indicated that the Forum was seen as a very worthwhile opportunity to showcase the range and quality of services available to the Young People of the West.

Trade Training Centre (TTC) Update

The BMLLEN as a "Partnership Broker" has facilitated two successful applications for DEEWR funding under the "Trade Training in Schools Program". Partnerships between cross sectoral schools, higher education and training institutions, Local Governments and the BMLLEN have forged the way forward for improved education provision and facilities in post compulsory curriculum for secondary school students.

Western Edge TTC

The Melton VET Cluster Trade Training Centre will be built on land provided by Victoria University at the Melton VU Campus site.  It will be a new building and provide facilities for delivery of Building and Construction, Engineering, Electro-technology and Hairdressing.  It will have a computer assisted design and manufacturing area as well as a learning commons for individual and classroom theory and research activities.  The Cluster will also look to have a Business Administration Course delivered on the site with students involved in some of the business activities of the facility.  The Cluster is looking to have the Centre ready for classes in February 2012.

Brimbank TTC

The Brimbank VET Cluster is upgrading three school sites- Copperfield College, Keilor Downs Secondary College and Marian College - to provide better facilities to deliver Automotive, Hospitality, Hairdressing, Building and Construction and Electro-technology to all schools in the Brimbank VET Cluster.  This is a combination of new building and equipment and upgrades to existing facilities.  These facilities should be ready to begin classes in February 2012.

Western Access TTC

Facilitated by BMLLEN & Melbourne Moonee Valley LLEN (MMVLLEN) twelve schools in the Brimbank and Maribyrnong LGA (Catholic, Government Secondary and Government Specialist) have developed a cluster for trade training purposes.

An application will be lodged in May 2010 to DEEWR for consideration of facility provision across five school sites to provide twelve Certificate III qualifications in skill shortage areas.  Outcome of the applications success will not be announced by DEEWR until early 2011.

The Brimbank/Melton LLEN will continue to support the process to completion of these projects.  Part of this will include seeking sponsorship of the facilities by companies in the field and promote opportunities available to businesses to partner with schools in creating pathways for young people into skilled employment.

Research

Brimbank Melton LLEN in partnership with University of Ballarat conducted research in 2009 into the factors that influence young people in their decision to either take-up, or not take-up Tertiary studies when they leave school. Of particular interest are the reasons why a significant number of students who successfully applied for a Tertiary placement (in either a university or TAFE course) chose to then reject that offer. The research was greatly assisted by the cooperation of each school in the Melton–Moorabool LGAs through the provision of data, and the willingness of young school leavers to participate in focus groups.

The research study explores the ways and means by which partners the region can improve the prospects for its young people through encouraging an increase in the uptake of Tertiary studies. The full report is available for download.
